What Is Coaching?
Coaching is a rapidly growing industry, but anyone who’s heard of it will likely bring their own ideas of what it actually involves. The International Caching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.” Coaching is all about the journey to get you from A to B. Whether that’s in your career, a hobby, relationship, or even just something you’d like to change in your own ways of being. It allows you to take an honest and non-judgemental look at where you are now. You can then examine exactly what you want to achieve, and plan realistic steps to do it. It’s a collaborative process that challenges you to commit to taking action. It keeps you accountable on your journey, while supporting you along the way.
Transformative coaching lets us work on personal development at a deeper level. It takes a holistic view of you as an individual and the systems within which you operate. As well as external barriers, transformative coaching creates the space to explore any internal blockers and beliefs that might hold you back. It allows us to understand the underlying narratives we tell ourselves. We can then use our increased self-awareness to work towards making deep-level changes.
What Does Coaching Look Like?
Coaching is a partnership between coach and client, so a coaching relationship may take on many different forms. At it’s core though, coaching is about powerful conversations, no matter where or when they may happen. I mainly offer coaching via video call (Zoom, Teams etc.) or phone, but may also work in person where possible.
The process of coaching is entirely client led; placing you as the expert in your own life. At the start of each session I will follow your lead in deciding the most beneficial use of our time together. We will then have a conversation exploring your thoughts and beliefs around the goal you’re working towards, your actions to reach it so far, and possible ways you would overcome the barriers that stand in your way. Sounds simple, right? You’d be surprised what can be achieved through such a simple conversation!
While it may take a similar format and incorporate some of the same influences, coaching is not the same as theapy. Unlike therapy or counselling, coaching doesn’t seek to dignose or ‘fix’. The aim is to help you to understand what changes will help you achieve your goals, support you as you make those changes, and to build a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Are You Ready?
If you feel that you’re stuck in any area of life then I’d like to help. All that’s needed is the ability to be truly honest with yourself, to be open to the possibility of change, and to be willing to address the thoughts and behaviours that limit your growth. If this sounds like you, then you’re ready for coaching!
